UnMasKit! and the Environment

The UnMasKit!™ is designed to be as sustainable & environmentally friendly as possible.

We are striving to improve our ecological footprint by developing better sustainable business practices and encouraging suppliers and others who work with us to do the same. We welcome your suggestions.

palm oil cream

Palm Oil Cream

  • Our barrier cream is made from 100% organic palm oil and nothing else. Organic farming methods help preserve & protect the environment.
  • Petroleum Jelly is typically used as barrier cream. Petroleum products deplete oil reserves and contribute to oil-related problems worldwide.

Plaster Cloth Rolls

Plaster Cloth Rolls

  • Our plaster cloth is made from crushed gypsum rock and cotton. Our manufacturer uses water in their plaster cloth production process.
  • Other plaster cloth manufacturers use environmentally polluting ammonia in the making of their plaster cloth.

Paint

Paint

  • Our powder milk paints are made from milk, limestone, and natural pigments. They are harmless to the environment.
  • Other paints are typically either oil based, which contain ingredients that pollute the ground and water, or water-based latex paints, which may contain polluting heavy metals. Used paint accounts for up to 70% of the average US household’s 20 pounds of yearly hazardous waste production.

Paint Brushes

Paint Brushes

  • Our paint brushes are made with natural bristles and unpainted wood.
  • Other brushes have painted handles that contain heavy metals, which contribute to the hazardous waste content in the environment. Brushes made with plastic handles contribute to the depletion of oil reserves and associated problems.

Cellulose Bags

Cellulose Bags

  • Our bags, which hold our paints and plaster cloth, are made from biodegradable and compostable cellulose.
  • Other bags are made of plastic and contribute to plastic and petroleum-based environmental and other problems. In the US, 30% of all manufactured plastic is used for packaging.

paper clip

Paper Clips

  • Our paper clips, which are used to reseal paint bags, contain 25% post consumer recycled metal and 85% recycled metal content.
  • Other paper clips are made of virgin metal, which depletes resources and contributes to environmental destruction.

paper

Paper

  • Our paper is made with 100% post consumer recycled fiber and is processed chlorine free.
  • Paper and paper products use about 35% of the world’s annual tree harvest. Every ton of virgin paper uses 682.5 gallons of oil and 10.401 kilowatt hours of electricity. In addition, every year the paper industry dumps millions of pounds of toxins into rivers and coastal waters, and contributes significantly to air pollution.

Boxes

Boxes

  • Our kit boxes are made with 100% post consumer recycled fiber and processed chlorine free.
  • General packaging materials deplete a vast array of resources when they are made. Once used, they make up 30% of the municipal waste stream. US residents generate an average of 463 pounds of packaging per person per year.

Ink

Ink

  • Soy ink is used for printing on our kit box.
  • Conventional printers use petroleum-based inks that contain hazardous heavy metals.

Kit Design

Kit Design

  • Our kit box is designed to exactly hold all contents with no excess space, hence the small box size. It is also designed to be self-locking & closing in order to be glue-free.
  • Other boxes are designed to look impressively large in order to deceive buyers into thinking they’re getting a more substantial product. Other boxes also use toxic glues for box strengthening.

Your Supplies

Your Supplies

  • To prevent the waste of use-once-only items, you are asked to provide old towels and sheets as covers and drop cloths, and your own paint and water containers.
  • Using your own materials rather than providing new ones, limits waste and pollution, conserves energy and resources, and lowers costs and selling price.
