Peace Prayers Project
Fall 2001, Goldenstein Art Gallery, Sedona, AZ
This project started as a response to the second Iraq war by participants from a group called Voices of Hope, Jodee Smith, Kateri Carabel, Peter Reed, Monika Cate, and Pash. Initial mask making participants made masks of their faces and hands. They constructed bodies and costumes to go with them, and decorated with their visions of peace. Art curator and gallery owner Linda Goldenstein exhibited the project at her Goldenstein Art Gallery. Project participants were interviewed and aired on Linda’s art-related television show. A grand opening celebration in memory of 9/11 drew a large crowd outside Goldenstein Gallery. World class musicians, including Chris Spheris, Anthony Mazella, Martha Redbone, Richard Salem and many others played. Performers, Buddhist nun chanters, artists, and poets--including poetry slam master Christopher Lane--delivered impassioned offerings. It was an exhibit, and a night, not soon forgotten!
